week 6 - Surprise - Conner family, Sheridan family

After years of researching my family history, it wasn't totally unexpected when two separate branches of my family finally intersected.

Imagine my surprise when, while diving into my husband’s family tree, the name Kipp popped up—and I thought, “Wait a minute, is this a long-lost cousin or just another family plot twist?”  The Kipp name was also in my family tree.

Hiram Kipp was born 31 May 1802 in Poughkeepsie, New York, the son of John and Ruth (Carpenter) Kipp. The Kipp family were early settlers of New York and were of Quaker persuasion.

Hiram married Sarah Harvey (born Bucks co, Pennsylvania 11 Dec 1804) on 21 December 1825 in Ontario, Canada. They were the parents of nine children - all born in Canada.

By 1871, Hiram, Sarah, and several of their children had relocated from Canada to Goodland Township in Lapeer, Michigan. There, Hiram bought 160 acres in Section 30 of the township. Five of their children moved to Michigan, two stayed in Canada and two traveled into South Dakota.

Two of their sons who migrated to Michigan settled within 43 miles of each other. Oliver (born June 26, 1828, in Canada) settled in Port Huron, St. Clair County, while George (born July 13, 1839, in Canada), made his home in Goodland twp., Lapeer County near his parents.

Oliver married Sarah Jones ca 1854 in Canada and together they had seven children. Last born daughter, Olive Alzina, was born on May 13, 1870. Olive married Steven C. Voorhees in 1891 in Midland, Michigan.

Their daughter, Catherine Voorhees, married Rexford Sheridan. Catherine and Rexford’s daughter, Sally Sheridan married Don Bartlett, and they had one son, Steven Bartlett.

George Kipp married Francis Mihill (born 8 Oct 1836 in Ontario, Canada) on 20 Jan 1861 in Yarmouth township, Elgin County, Ontario, Canada. They had nine children, and the last one born was a daughter Ruth Kipp (born 2 May 1876) in Goodland, Michigan. She married William Conner on 9 October 1907 in Lapeer, Michigan.  William was born in Uxbridge, Ontario, Canada 18 Aug 1867.

Ruth and William had a son, George J. Conner, who married Agnes Magdalena Robinet. Together, they had a son, Kenneth Conner. Kenneth married Doris Daly and had a son Daniel Conner.

Daniel Conner is my husband, and Steven Bartlett is my first cousin, once removed. My connection to Steven is through his grandmother Catherine (Kate) Vorhees who married my mom's brother Rexford Sheridan.

My husband and my maternal cousin are fourth cousins as they share the same 3rd great-grandparents.

One was a blonde; one was a red head.... both have killer smiles and were tall and lanky.  Both have soft and sweet dispositions, and both were raised by single moms. Now they are both a bit grey and not so lanky. But it's incredible how much they resemble each other.
