Week 26 - Favorite Name - Sheridan, Prince & Kipp

This week's prompt is 'favorite name'...well I certainly can't pick one child over the other, but I can chat about a few names that have always stood out to me.  Such as Cleo, Leo, Lorelei, Erastus and Lutie Alma.

Cleo and Leo are repeat names from the Sheridan family and were interchanged between first and middle names. In one generation, Cleo Sheridan is a female. The next generation Cleo and Leo Sheridan were twin boys. The next generation we had Cleo Gray, who went by the name Ike. Little Leo McCarthy was born in 1901 and died in 1904 from Diphtheria. Where those names came from and why they were repeated for a few generations I have never been able to figure out.

Leo McCarthy son of Alice (Sheridan) and William McCarthy

Lorelei Sheridan was the daughter of Leo and Marie (Baker) Sheridan. She was born in 1920 in Lansing, Michigan and died in 1978 in Spokane, Washington. She was my mom's first cousin, and I remember mom saying what a pretty lady she was. Lorelei married Mel Trevegno and had five children.

The name Erastus shows up three times in my family trees. Twice in the Bliss/Yaw family (my Mayflower line) and once in my Prince family. 1800, 1825 and 1850 eras. It means 'beloved' and is from the Bible.

Lutie Alma Bemiss - I just feel sorry for her. I haven't found any proof that it was a nickname. I pray she wasn't made fun of in her youth. Her sister was named Ettie. Her great grandmother was Sarah (Smith) Prince and Sarah was my 3x great grandmother. Lutie was a schoolteacher, never married and died young at age 31 in Augusta twp., Washtenaw County, Michigan from pneumonia.

Cadwallader Jones was from the Kipp/Voorhees family. He was from Wales, so maybe that explains it? He was born ca 1812 in Wales and married Eleanor Owens before immigrating to America.  They had a daughter Sarah born 1832 in Wales. Sarah married Oliver Kipp in Illinois, moved to Canada and then into Michigan and settled and died near Port Huron. He was one of my cousin Sally's (Sheridan Bartlett Woods) 3x great grandfathers.

My great grandfather Frank T Prince was born 20 May 1867 in Decatur, Van Buren County, Michigan. He was the youngest of six children (five living) of Matthew and Abigail (Bess) Prince. His parents decided to honor all of the previous generations and named him Francis James Matthew Thomas Prince. No wonder he shortened it.

If I had to state my favorite name out of all of my families that have been researched, I would have to say it's ....... 'Amelia'.
